Frequently Asked Questions

What is telehealth?

Will therapy ever be held in the office?

Telehealth is the use of communication technology, most often video, to provide care when the provider and the client are not in the same place at the same time. The use of telehealth has been available for years and used by many different practitioners in healthcare. We have seen an increase in usage and access especially within the last two years at the rise of the Covid-19 public health emergency.

What does this mean for Diasporic Healing? This means that we conduct therapy virtually using a HIPAA compliant video conferencing platform. At this time, we are continuing to provide services virtually. We anticipate this being the case for the foreseeable future, as we encourage meeting you where you are and doing our best to ensure your safety and ours.

What do you mean by "physically present" in DC, Maryland, or Virginia?

Our therapists are currently licensed to practice in the District of Columbia, Maryland and/or Virginia. As therapists, we are only allowed to practice in the state or jurisdiction where we hold an active license. When engaging via telehealth, we are only allowed to provide therapy to someone who is physically located in the place we hold an active license.

This means that, if you are not physically located in DC, Maryland or Virginia (depending on which therapist you are connected to) at the time of your telehealth appointment, we are not able to provide you with the support you seek. We will either have to reschedule your appointment to another time, or will happily refer you to someone who is licensed in the state or jurisdiction where you spend most of your time.

What happens in therapy?

In the beginning, during the first few sessions together, we have the opportunity to learn more about each other and focus on gaining a full understanding of who you are and how you are showing up to the space. With this foundation, we also connect on how we will work together moving forward, including working together to create any specific goals of interest.

As we continue in the therapeutic relationship, we at Diasporic Healing focus on creating a space that encourages the flow of conversation where you have the space to process, learn, and grow.

How often is therapy?

Individual sessions are usually 40 - 53 minutes long, and occur on a weekly, sometimes bi-weekly, basis.

As we work together, we discuss your wants, needs, and goals to collaborate on the best schedule for you.

Do you currently see children and adolescents for therapy?

Thank you for your interest. Unfortunately, we do not; we provide services to adults aged 18 and older.

Do you give homework?

This is entirely up to you! The use of "homework" as a strategy for support is something we talk about during our time getting to know each other.

Because honestly, while therapy is hard work, the hardest work actually occurs in all of those hours outside of that 1-hour time block with us!

All that to say: We do not typically give "homework", however, we do encourage folks to engage in reflection or practices between sessions.

What insurances do you accept?

We are currently an in-network provider with Cigna and Carefirst.

When engaging in therapy using insurance, your payment responsibility may look like a copay, coinsurance, or meeting a deductible.

Prior to scheduling an appointment, we encourage you to contact your insurance provider directly to learn more about your specific in-network benefits.

We are consider an out-of-network provider otherwise. If we are out of network for you, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement through your health insurance coverage. We encourage you to connect with your insurance provider directly to determine your out-of-network benefits.

If you would like to work with us as an out-of-network provider and would like to use your health insurance benefits, you will pay the full fee at the time of services and we will provide you a "superbill" (a detailed invoice) that you can then submit to your insurance plan directly for reimbursement.

How much do sessions cost at full fee?

This is the question on everyone's minds: Cost. And it's a great question to ask!

As of June 2022, the full fee for sessions are:

For a variety of reasons, many people choose to engage in therapy as self-pay, even when they also have an insurance plan. Engaging as a self-pay client is an option for you at Diasporic Healing. Payment is due at the time of service and accepted via credit card.

When are you available?

Our sessions are generally held Monday through Friday, generally between 9am and 5pm, with evening and weekend availability depending on the therapy provider. Check out our therapist profiles for our availability!

Most of our clients secure an appointment at the same time each week.  To get more specific information about current availability, please feel free to connect with us!

How do I get started?

We are excited about the opportunity to work together and look forward to connecting with you! We will begin accepting new clients in Summer 2024. If you would like to hear from us at that time, you can:
