Telehealth is the use of communication technology, most often video, to provide care when the provider and the client are not in the same place at the same time. The use of telehealth has been available for years and used by many different practitioners in healthcare. We saw the increase in usage and access in the midst of the Covid-19 public health emergency and onward.
What does this mean for Diasporic Healing? Diasporic Healing is a virtual mental health practice, conducting therapy virtually using a HIPAA compliant video conferencing platform. We expect this being the case for the foreseeable future, as we encourage meeting you where you are and doing our best to ensure your safety and convenience and ours.
As a therapist, I am allowed and obligated to practice in the state or jurisdiction in which I hold an active license; this would be in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, or Massachusetts, and allowed to practic are only allowed to practice in the state or jurisdiction where we hold an active license.
When engaging via telehealth, this means I am able to provide therapy services to someone physically located in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, or Massachusetts at the time of the appointment. If you reside in one of these areas, according to current regulations, I am not able to meet with you and would be happy to refer you to someone who is licensed in the state or jurisdiction where you spend most of your time.
A note to current clients: If you are a current client, these rules also apply if you are out of town, domestically or internationally. Your appointment would have to be rescheduled to another time.
In the beginning, during the first few sessions together, we have the opportunity to learn more about each other and focus on gaining a full understanding of who you are and how you are showing up to the space. With this foundation, we also explore how we will work together moving forward, including working together to create any specific goals of interest and how often your sessions are.
As we continue in the therapeutic relationship, we at Diasporic Healing focus on creating a space that encourages the flow of conversation where you have the space to process, learn, and grow.
Individual sessions are usually 55 minutes long, and occur on a weekly, sometimes bi-weekly, basis.
As we work together, we discuss your wants, needs, and goals to collaborate on the best schedule for you.
Thank you for your interest. However, we do not see minors; we provide services to adults aged 18 and older.
This is entirely up to you! The use of "homework" as a strategy for support is something we talk about during our time getting to know each other.
Because honestly, while therapy is hard work, the hardest work actually occurs in all of those hours outside of that 1-hour time block with us!
All that to say: If you are wondering if I give specific worksheets after each session, the answer is no. However, I do encourage continued work between sessions; that might look a worksheet, listening to a podcast, or reading an article, and it can also generally is prioritizing a certain practice or reflection.
We are currently an in-network provider with Cigna, Carefirst/BCBS and Maryland Medicaid.*
When engaging in therapy using insurance, your payment responsibility may look like a copay, coinsurance, or meeting a deductible.
Prior to scheduling an appointment, we encourage you to contact your insurance provider directly to learn more about your specific in-network benefits.
We are consider an out-of-network provider otherwise. If we are out of network for you, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement through your health insurance coverage. We encourage you to connect with your insurance provider directly to determine your out-of-network benefits.
If you would like to work with us as an out-of-network provider and would like to use your health insurance benefits, you will pay the full fee at the time of services and we will provide you a "superbill" (a detailed invoice) that you can then submit to your insurance plan directly for reimbursement.
*A note for residents of Massachusetts: because of your state's regulations regarding medical care and health insurance, it is imperative you confirm I am in network with your insurance plan.
This is the question on everyone's minds: Cost. And it's a great question to ask!
As of January 2026, the full fee for sessions are:
The initial 55-minute diagnostic evaluation (90791) = $200.
A 53-minute individual therapy session (90837) = $175
